British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
