Right-leaning responses to the limited release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included no previously unseen information.
