A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
